Gary Owen Peterson passed away peacefully in his home on November 22, 2019. Gary was born in Woodland, California, on April 25, 1932, to Oscar and Ruth Doak Peterson. He grew up in College City and graduated from Pierce High School in 1949. He attended the University of California, Davis, where he graduated with a degree in Agronomy/Pomology in 1951. (At that time, UCD was a satellite campus of Berkeley, allowing him to become an alumnus of the University of California, Berkeley.) Thus, Gary was set on his path of being a lifelong backer of Cal Bears football. While at UCD, he met Daurice Endsley, whom he married in 1953.
Gary entered the Air Force in January of 1952. He was first stationed in Amarillo, Texas for two and a half years where their daughter, Lynn, was born. Gary trained as a jet engine mechanic and quickly advanced to become an instructor. He was stationed in Greenland for a year and then George AFB in Victorville, California. He joked his tours of duty were not in the most glamorous location, but at the time they were better than Korea.
After his discharge from the Air Force in 1956, Gary returned to College City where he farmed the family almond orchards for forty years. He was a trustee of the Pierce Unified School Board for eight years, and became a member of the Arbuckle Golf Course when he took up golf later in life. Gary was an active member of the Arbuckle Methodist Church, on the board of the College City Cemetery, as well as a member of the American Legion and VFW.
Lynn remembers him as a devoted and dedicated father. He proudly supported his daughter at her many 4-H events, where he was often the only dad in attendance.
Gary married Cynthia Scofield Clasby in 1978. They traveled the United States, often following the Cal Bears to many Bowl games. Over the years, Gary and Cynthia owned numerous homes in South Lake Tahoe and enjoyed spending as much time there as possible. They also enjoyed traveling to other locations in the US, as well as places closer to home such as Fort Bragg and Monterey. However, New England in the fall was their favorite destination.
Gary is survived by his wife, Cynthia; daughter, Lynn Brown and son-in-law, Norm of Fair Oaks; four grandchildren, Aaron Brown of San Diego, LauraLee Quinn (Tyler) of San Jose, Ian Brown (Jessica) of Fair Oaks, and Devon Brown (Megan) of San Diego; and two great grandchildren, Rylen Brown and Grace Quinn.
Memorial services will be held on December 13, 2019, at 11:00a.m. at the Arbuckle Methodist Church, 9th and King Streets. A reception will follow at the Arbuckle Golf Club, 5918 Hillgate Road.
