Hal Raymond Charter was born on December 28th, 1934 in Arbuckle, California to Halbert and Marie Charter. He passed away peacefully, surrounding by family on November 18th, 2018 at Sutter General Hospital in Sacramento. Between those dates, Raymond lived a life as big as he was, days filled with family, love, hard work, honesty and integrity.
Raymond was raised on Charter Oaks Ranch with his sisters, Evelyn and Lorraine and his brother, Lyle. Raymond attended Arbuckle Elementary and graduated from Pierce High School in 1952. He was active in athletics and FFA. He graduated from the University of California at Davis and was a member of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. Raymond was drafted by the United States Army, serving mainly overseas in Germany. Upon returning to Arbuckle, he began almond farming with his family at Charter Oaks. In 1965, he married Mary Young and began establishing his life as a husband, father, farmer and community member. Raymond served on many boards for several years, the Colusa County Water District, the Arbuckle Golf Course, as well as the Arbuckle Community Church.
Raymond was preceded in death by his beloved Mary. He is survived by his loving siblings, Evelyn, Lyle and Lorraine as well as his children, Lillie Charter of Sacramento, Ellen(Michael)Voorhees and Halbert(Amy) Charter both of Arbuckle. Raymond has eight cherished grandchildren, Trevor and Ryne Rabena, Jake, Riley, and Luke Voorhees, Halle, Aiden, and Ysabel Charter.
Raymond was a central figure in Arbuckle. He could be seen at church functions, community and sporting events. Above all, Raymond loved to help others and brought a tremendous amount of joy to all that knew him. It seemed as though there was no job beyond his capabilities and he could move mountains. His larger than life personality and constant presence will be missed beyond measure.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, November 24th at 11 a.m. at the Arbuckle Cemetery at 400 State Highway 99 and a celebration to follow at Charter Oaks Ranch at 437 Wildwood Road.
