Kathryn Jean Boyes was born in Colusa, California June 9, 1930 to Alma Marie (LaGrande) and Jerome Peter Stephens. She passed away in Willows, California, August 8, 2018.
Jean was raised in Colusa and attended Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary School and Colusa High School before attending Yuba College in Marysville.
A devoted country girl at heart, Jean spent her summers working with her grandparents, Joe and Adeline LaGrande at their family ranch west of Williams. She loved living on the ranch where she was close to her aunts and uncles. Jean’s time at the ranch was inspirational and the trigger to helping her develop her God-given artistic talents. She became an accomplished painter winning many awards for her work with oil and water color.
She married William J. Boyes, Jr. February 9, 1950 and moved to Williams where her husband and his parents had owned and operated Boyes’ Beauty and Barber shop since 1926. A family soon followed with four sons.
Jean worked as a beautician for 50 years until her retirement in 2003. She continued to paint and also found a new passion as a grandmother.
Jean was proud of her role as a board member and contributing writer to the Colusi County Historical Society.
Jean is survived by her four sons, Nip and Vance (Nancy) both of Chico, Reese (Cori) of Silverton, Oregon and Brock (Kristin) of Cottonwood. She also has 8 grandchildren: Brooke, Ross, Lauren, Shelen, Hayden, Briar and Gannon Boyes and one great grandchild, Alexis Boyes.
A rosary will be held Friday, August 17th at 7 pm at McNary Moore funeral chapel. A requiem Mass will be held August 18th at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Colusa at 10 AM. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colusa. Following the services, family and friends are invited to Granzella’s Banquet Room in Williams to share memories and reminisce.
In lieu of flowers, her family requests donations to the Glenn-Colusa Cattlewomen’s Association, 3590 Brown Rd. Colusa, Ca 95932.
