Kay Campbell Spurgeon
February 19, 1944 – November 4, 2019
Kay Campbell Spurgeon, 75, of Colusa, passed away on November 4, 2019. after a determined battle back from a severe stroke early this year. Kay was born on February 19, 1944 in Bakersfield, CA California to Rufus and Ila Campbell of Arvin, CA; she was the youngest of six children.
Kay was proud to have been a child to oof Dust Bowl Immigrants who had traveled from Oklahoma to Weed Patch near her hometown of Arvin in 1937. After graduating high school, Kay attended Bakersfield College , and then later Fresno State, where she received her teaching credential. Through her roommate and future sister-in-law, Matie Ann Spurgeon of Colusa, CA, Kay meet her husband of 34 years, Eddie C. Edward Spurgeon. They were married in November 1965 and resided in Colusa, beginning in 1966.
Kay spent the next 54 years dedicating her life to education and community development, all the communities within Colusa County. She spent all of her years in education in Colusa County. Beginning In 1966, she taught classes Kay began teaching at Arbuckle Elementary. She went on to teach in all four districts in the county, teaching English courses and others at the junior and senior high level. She Kay also taught English classes for Yuba Community College and worked as Early Childhood Education Coordinator for Colusa Unified School District before becoming the Assistant Superintendent of Children's Services for the County Office of Education in 1984.
In 2015, Kay retired after 20 years (five elected terms) as Colusa County Superintendent of Schools. She was instrumental in the implementation of several programs, including 3+ Club for county students receiving a 3.0 PGA or higher. Kay was also a member of Rotary and Soroptimist. Additionally, Kay was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority for over 50 years where she enjoyed incredibly special friendships with an incredible amazing group of women.
Kay was also a loving mother to four children. An incredible role model, Sshe instilled in them the virtues of honesty, integrity, and a strong work-ethic. She was an incredible role model. Kay also loved being grandmother to ten grandchildren and great-grandmother to five great-grandchildren.
Kay is preceded in death by her husband, C. Edward Spurgeon, her parents Rufus and Ila (Davis) Campbell of Arvin, CA, and her brother, Donald Campbell of Arvin, CA. She is survived by her children, Kira (Ross) Stark of Idaho Nampa, ID, Erika (Neil) Pearson of Colusa, CA, Theron (Rebekah) Spurgeon of Georgia Evans, GA, and Tara (Tom) Schuller of Chico, CA, and their families;, her brothers siblings John Campbell of Bakersfield, CA, Bob Campbell of Portland, OR, Wylie Campbell of Portland, OR, and sister Delores Smith of Arvin, CA as well as 10 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and sister-in-law Matie Spurgeon of the many special friends that became like family.
There will be an Open House Memorial Remembrance on December 8, 2019 at the Colusa Golf Club to celebrate the incredible extraordinary friendships Kay made with so many people. Please join the family anytime between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. The event will be Christmas- themed in Kay’s honor. Feel free to dress accordingly.
